Taste and See Monday to benefit Glory House | Free News

If looking for a way to make a real difference in helping others, sometimes all that is required is to “taste and see.” And doing just that in historic downtown Laurel on Monday beginning at 6 p.m. will be your delicious opportunity.

More than 26 of Home Town’s finest restaurants will be serving unlimited tastings of their very best dishes and delicacies all along North Magnolia Street. The event is a fundraiser for The Glory House Global Outreach, a non-profit ministry whose mission is to serve others — especially those in need of love and care.

“We just want to help those who are in desperate need,” Glory House co-founder Grant Staples said. “Right now we are barely able to keep food on the shelves of our food pantry, and we are currently helping to feed more than 1,000 families per month in 10 counties.”

Organizers said the “Taste and See” theme is taken from Psalm 34:8 (NIV), which reads: “Taste and see that the Lord is good.”

Staples is hoping that this year’s event, the third of its kind, will eclipse the record $47,000 it raised last year. At that event, more than 400 portions of delightful dishes were served to attendees beneath the starry sky.

“National poverty is up over 12 percent from last year,” Staples said. “And right now, we are going through over 7,000 pounds of food every two weeks. It is really getting hard to keep food on the shelves.”

The organization also funds the restoration and rebuilding of houses under its Restore Jones County subsidiary.

“We have so far built seven homes from the ground up,” Staples said. “And we have been able to spend $1.2 million in rebuilding homes affected by recent tornadoes.”

The focus of this ministry is to assist the most vulnerable in the community as they recover from disaster.

Monday evening’s soiree will also feature a live auction, with items including half of a butchered cow (packaged and prepared), a trip to Belize and fully catered parties the winners will be able to schedule at both the Rogers-Green House and the Green Gates Farmhouse in Stringer.

Attendees will learn more about The Glory House in a video presentation highlighting all of the successes of the group in the past year, as well as a live band.
